Learn About Supported Living

We are advocating for a funding model that provides individuals with disabilities the rights and resources to create a self-directed, strength-based life in their home community.

In other states, one of the models that provides these rights is called Supported Living.

The State of Illinois does not have a funding model for Supported Living. Most of us are trying to create a Supported Living model using Home-Based funding. This funding is not sufficient to support a community-based, person-centered life. We do not believe our loved ones should be forced to choose a more restrictive environment to access more funding.

What is Supported Living?

Supported living, also known as independent living or community-based living, provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to live in their own homes or apartments with the necessary support services.

Key Features for Supported Living
  • Personalized Support: Services are tailored to the individual’s needs and goals, ranging from assistance with household tasks and transportation to money management and accessing community resources.
  • Focus on Independence: The goal is to promote self-determination, autonomy, and community integration.
  • Variety of Support Levels: The level of support can vary depending on the individual’s abilities and needs, with some individuals requiring minimal assistance while others need more intensive support.
  • Increased Independence: Supported living allows individuals to make their own choices and live more independently.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Living in a community setting can lead to a more fulfilling and enriching life.
  • Social Interaction: Supported living can help individuals with IDD break down barriers to social interaction and build relationships.
  • Access to Employment and Community Resources: Supported living can help individuals access employment opportunities and participate in community activities.
  • Assistance with daily living tasks: such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
  • Transportation: Help with getting to appointments, work, or other activities.
  • Money management: Assistance with budgeting and paying bills.
  • Access to community resources: Support in accessing healthcare, recreation, and other services.
  • Medication management: Assistance with taking medications and attending appointments.
